Can I Perform Online Partitioning While Capturing From Backint for SAP HANA?
Question
While capturing changes from Backint for SAP HANA, can I partition the database online without issue during replication?
Environment
- HVR 6
- Source: Backint for SAP HANA
Answer
Yes, you can perform online partitioning in SAP HANA while capturing changes using Backint for SAP HANA. However, to avoid Capture delays or performance impact, consider the following factors:
Logging and backup consistency
Backint integrates with the database kernel to perform backups. Online partitioning typically doesn't interrupt Backint operations, and SAP HANA maintains ACID compliance during these activities. However, we recommend ensuring that the partitioning process doesn't interfere with the transactional consistency of the backup.
Performance impact
Although online partitioning is designed to be minimally disruptive, it can temporarily increase resource usage. To avoid impacting or delaying backup processes, schedule partitioning during off-peak hours.
Backup configuration
Backint typically handles partition changes automatically and doesn't require manual updates when partitions are added or modified. However, we still recommend verifying that your Backint configuration recognizes new partitions, especially if your backup strategy requires awareness of specific partition structures.
From an HVR perspective, online partitioning may temporarily cause Capture delays or messages indicating that a transaction log cannot be found. These conditions are expected and should resolve automatically once the partitioning operation completes and we can find the transaction again.
