Fivetran Skills Setup Guide Private Preview
Follow our setup guide to install and configure Fivetran skills for your AI agent.
Prerequisites
To use a Fivetran skill, you need the following:
- A supported AI agent
- A supported destination
- An active connection syncing data into your destination
Setup instructions
Install the skill
Log in to your Fivetran dashboard.
On the navigation menu, click Skills.
In the skills marketplace, select the skill that you want to install.
You can search for a skill using the Search bar or browse skills by category.
Click Install to open the skill's setup page.
Each skill displays a label to indicate whether that skill is ready to be installed. If the label shows Ready, proceed with the installation. If it shows Data Not Connected, click See Requirements to verify the requirements for that skill.
Click Run readiness check to verify that your data and data pipeline meet the requirements for the skill. Fivetran verifies the following requirements as part of the readiness check:
- The connector syncs accurate data to the required tables.
- The destination is supported.
- The required tables or dbt models are available. This check does not block skill installation.
You can install the skill only after the required checks pass.
Once the readiness checks pass, click Install skill.
Choose your AI agent and follow the instructions to install the skills in your local environment. The installation steps may vary depending on the AI agent you choose.
Perform the following steps in the integrated terminal of your development environment:
Open a terminal of your choice and run
claude.Add the Fivetran Skills marketplace.
/plugin marketplace add fivetran/skillsInstall the Fivetran Skills plugin from the marketplace. Replace
<skill-id>with the actual skill ID. For more information, see Skills catalog./plugin install <skill-id>@fivetran-skillsSelect where you want to install the skill:
- Install for you (user scope)
- Install for all collaborators on this repository (project scope)
- Install for you in this repo only (local scope)
Reload your plugins to load the skill and make it available in the current session.
/reload-plugins
- Open Claude Code Desktop.
- On the navigation menu, click Customize, and then click Plugins.
- Click + Add > Add Marketplace.
- In the URL field, enter
fivetran/skillsand then click Sync. - Go to the Plugins tab, and then click Discover to see the available plugin options.
- Select the plugin for the skill you want to install, and then click Add.
For non-Anthropic AI agents, follow these steps to install skills from the Fivetran Skills repository in your local AI agent environment. This is the recommended installation method for agents such as Codex, Gemini CLI, and Cursor.
Run the following command:
npx skills@latest add fivetran/skills --skill <skill-id>Restart your agent.
Configure the skill
Perform this step only if you are configuring a skill for the first time.
Launch the skill to begin its initial setup:
- Claude Code: Enter
/<skill-id>:<skill-id>. - Claude Desktop: Enter
/<skill-id>. - Codex: Enter
$<skill-id>, or run/skillsand select the skill. - Gemini CLI: Ask a question related to the skill, and then enter
ywhen prompted to activate the skill. To verify that the skill is installed, run/skills list.
Replace
<skill-id>with the ID of the skill.- Claude Code: Enter
When the skill asks whether you know which warehouse contains your Fivetran data, select one of the following options:
- I know: Select this option if you know the warehouse and database, project ID, or catalog name where your data is stored.
- I don't know: Select this option if you want the skill to identify your destination using your Fivetran API key and setup script.
Perform the steps for the option you selected:
If you selected I know:
i. Enter the warehouse type and the database/project ID/catalog name.
If you don't know your project ID, run
gcloud projects listfor BigQuery orsnow connection listfor Snowflake.ii. The skill validates whether your warehouse CLI is installed and authenticated. Fivetran runs this check once you invoke the skill locally for the first time. If the CLI is not authenticated, follow the instructions that the skill provides.
iii. Select the Schema that contains the data you want the skill to analyze. For example, for BigQuery, if you enter project
manual-harbor-40, the skill lists the datasets in that project, such asad_reporting,marketo_v3,salesforce, andstaging.iv. Depending on the schema you selected, the skill reads the tables in that schema and identifies the matching Fivetran connections or data models. It displays information such as the source-specific data models, multi-source data models, and data freshness.
If multiple schemas match the same connector, the skill shows the matching schemas and asks you to select one. If no schemas match, the skill notifies you and asks you to verify the database and schema names or switch to the API key method.
If you selected I don't know:
i. Open a terminal outside your Claude Code session and run the following setup command:
/Users/<username>/.claude/plugins/cache/fivetran-skills/<skill-id>/<version>/skills/<skill-id>/asa.sh setup --skill <skill-id>Replace
<username>with your username and<version>with the version of the skill you installed. You can find the version in the~/.claude/plugins/cache/fivetran-skills/<skill-id>/directory. The version changes when the skill is updated, therefore we recommend using the exact command the skill displays during setup.ii. Enter your Base64-encoded API key.
If you don't already have a Base64-encoded API key, you can generate a new API key.
iii. Enter
Done. The skill identifies the destinations where your data is synced.iv. Select the destination that contains the data you want the skill to query.
After you complete the setup, the skill reuses the saved configuration for future sessions. You do not need to repeat the setup unless your configuration changes.
Invoke the skill
Ask a question related to the skill's domain. For example, What was our Shopify revenue last week?.
When the AI agent determines that your question matches an installed skill, it automatically invokes the skill, runs the required queries against your destination, and returns the results.
You can also invoke the skill manually. For example, in Claude Code enter the skill command followed by your question: /store-performance-analysis:store-performance-analysis What was our revenue last week?
